It is very difficult to redefine a product that has been on the market for a very long time, and this product has met the challenge masterfully.

Design process

Our process started with extensive user studies such as interviewing and observing professional painters, amateurs and hobbyists. We learned that a comfortable and ergonomic grip is always different for all people, but also that a "pen grip" would facilitate precision painting and a relaxed posture. Based on our research and insights we explored several brush shapes along the process, and ended up with a long sleek design with great balance and reach, which brings to mind classic fine-art brushes. The different concepts were 3D-printed and evaluated in user tests, which led us to a more design alterations and a final design proposal.
